The Power of Spoken Word Poetry

What is the power of our voices? This essential question has guided our 6th-grade Humanities students in Stephanie Kinkel’s Quest, leading them on a journey of poetic exploration, self-expression, and spoken word performance.

Over the term, students immersed themselves in poetry—reading and listening to a diverse range of poets, analyzing the craft behind their words, and experimenting with their own writing. They explored how language can evoke emotion, raise awareness, and inspire change. Through journaling and reflection, they identified issues that matter most to them, channeling their thoughts and experiences into their own original poems.

The culmination of this journey? "Voices in Verse," a powerful student-published anthology featuring each author’s work. As a celebration of their creative efforts, our students recently gathered for a book launch event where they performed their poetry, shared their voices, and signed copies of their anthology for peers, parents, and community members.

From themes of identity and belonging to social justice and personal growth, these young poets have used their voices to express, connect, and advocate. Their performances were filled with passion, rhythm, and raw emotion—proving that poetry is not just about words on a page but about the impact those words can have when spoken aloud.
